Proverbs - A One Month Study

Today on K-LOVE (national Christian Radio Station) I heard the morning show mention that they were going to do Proverbs 31 Chapters in 31 Days for the month of October. I will probably miss over half of their discussions as I only even caught this one on the tail end, but the idea stuck with me all day. So, I decided to try and do a daily post about each chapter of Proverbs. I will most often be reading from an NIV Student Study Bible. I would love to hear from any of you during my process. I am far from an expert and any thing I say is taken from my understanding of what I am reading.

Proverbs Chapter 1:

This chapter focuses on Foolishness, Wisdom, Discipline, and Enticement.

Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." It discusses the importance of gaining wisdom and in not following the paths or joining in with sinners. Important advice to follow yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Tonight in Bible Study we learned that if you want to make a change you cannot continue on the same path you have used in the past. In essence you must gain knowledge of your past actions, and make an active change to see a change. Also, if you continue to surround yourself with those whom you commit your sins then you most likely will continue the sin. Common sense, my friends, but I think sometimes we all need a reminder.

I hope to hear from some of you along the way. If you are familiar with the chapter or want to read it and add in your thoughts then I would love to read your comments. Please remember to be respectful. I know sometimes differing views in religion can be difficult to accept.

  2. At the beginning of our relationship with God, there is a fear of punishment lest we stray away from it. It is not a fear that lasts with us forever, as the letter of John says, 'perfect love casts out fear', but it is a healthy fear that accompanies us as the beginning and points us in the right direction. By 'knowledge' it means knowledge of God, and that means our relationship with Him. Those who despise this and reject the discipline this fear offers, are foolish in Truth, even if the world may consider them wise.

I have little problem with accepting people of different viewpoints on religious issues, although I do often dislike it when sometimes our society sees discussing these questions, even if it involves argument against each other's position, as something that just shouldn't be done. It's very unfortunate, because there isn't really many questions that ought to be discussed more than this one.

Even in written work, and I'm a christian fiction author, people will deliberately avoid directly addressing religious issues with fear of it being too controversial or provocative.

    This is what Jesus said:

Matthew 10:34 Do not think I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

    God Bless,

  3. Sheila - can't wait to read your thoughts

David - I don't know how you found my blog, but I am glad you did. It is a pleasure to see you here. Religion is so touchy that people shy away least they offend someone. I agree the only way to really understand it all is to discuss it and read the Word. I hate it when people won't read a book for fear it will question their beliefs. I also despise when people are are certain religion just because they always have been. You should know what your church stands for, why, and if you agree with it. Thanks so much for your viewpoint.
